A Week of Prince - The Concerts, will.i.am, and Tyler Perry!

A lot has happened in the world of Prince this week, here's a summary of what's been happening!

will.i.am shared with MTV the praise Prince gave him for writing "I Gotta Feeling". "I remember we played the song in Minnesota, and Prince was at the show, and he called me on the phone afterwards. He said, 'Congratulations,' " will.i.am recalled. "He says, 'You know, those songs don't come all the time. You're blessed to have one of those songs. You know, they're gifts.' I was like, 'Wow.' For someone like Prince to tell you that, that's bigger than a Grammy for me."

Tyler Perry was a guest on Lopez Tonight and revealed how cool he thinks Prince is. He shared how one day he performed Madea in one of his shows and covered "Purple Rain". Prince called him the next day and said "Don't do my song again or I'm gonna sue you", he then continued and said "I need five tickets, I'll be at the show tonight". He came, brought Chaka Khan, and loves Madea. He also started singing "Purple Rain" in the audiance. He also called him up onstage at one of his concerts and made him sing "Play That Funky Music White Boy"! Tyler says he killed it!

April 21st - second concert of the 21 Nite Stand shows - Prince payed tribute to Michael Jackson by covering "Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough" with his vocalists Shelby, Elisa, and Liv. Prince sings some of the song "Nasty Girl" Sheila E. also performed 9 songs with Prince! Another special treat, The E. Family was the opening act.

April 22nd - third concert of the 21 Nite Stand shows - The amazing R&B group Mint Condition was the opening act. Prince payed tribute to Michael Jackson again by covering "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough". Cuba Gooding Jr. joins Prince on the stage and dances his #@$ off with Sheila E., Shelby, Liv, and Elisa. So far Cuba is the celebrity who has danced the best alongside Prince! Then one of the BEST treats, Alicia Keys joined Prince to perform "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore", Prince teases and says "I think it's got something to do with Swizz Beatz". At the very end after the encores, and when most of the crowd was gone, Prince came out riding on a bycycle - absolutely wonderful! LOVE IT!

April 23rd - 4th concert of the 21 Nite Stand shows - The Queen of Funk herself, Chaka Khan opened up for Prince! Legendary Larry Graham performed "Everyday People" and "Thank You" with Prince. Prince is truly paying a great hommage to the king of pop, once again he covered "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough". There were FOUR encores and the closing number was “Hollywood Swinging”, Prince changed the lyrics to “Inglewood Swinging.”

So when are the next shows taking place? No one really knows yet, but the lovely Twinz have posted a message on their Facebook page: "About to head to rehearsals for new songs for the Prince show!!! wooo heeee!! how is everyone today? Love love love!!!" We're thinking probably next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. We'll soon all find out.

Prince 21 Nite Stand - Inglewood, CA Google Map

I wanted to create something special for Prince's Twenty One Nite Stand concerts in Inglewood, California and decided to create a Google Map.

The map includes a way to get from the airport to The Forum, places to stay (hotels and motels), places to eat, go out, and different landmarks showing where Prince performed for other tours since 1979. The map also includes pictures and videos.

It's just the start, a lot can still be added or changed, so let me know what you think and I'll try to make this the best Prince Twenty One Nite Stand map I can make!

Bootsy Collins Pays Tribute to James Brown on New Album

BOOTSY COLLINS OFFERS FREE DOWNLOAD OF JAMES BROWN TRIBUTESONG
"JB - STILL THE MAN"
OFF OF NEW ALBUM,THE FUNK CAPITAL OF THE WORLD

To celebrate the April  26th release of his newstudio album "Tha Funk Capitalof the World", funk legend Bootsy Collins is making  the track “JB – Still The Man” available as a free MP3 download. Fans can  download the songnow by visiting Mascot Label Group, it's a great track and a wonderful tribute to James Brown, so go ahead and listen to "Still The Man" there now!

"Still The Man" is a thoughtful and heavily funky analysis of Brown’s style and impact, set to a groove plucked from the same bag as “Super Bad,” “Soul Power” and “Sex Machine,” classics Bootsy and Catfish helped put the shake to during their early ’70s tenure in Brown’s band the J.B’s.

“In a way, Mr. Brown is the biggest influence on this whole album,” says Bootsy. “When I joined his band, he took me under his wing and taught me about the business, but the most important thing he taught me about was the ‘one’ – the downbeat that always drove his music and is the engine for all great funk.”

Prince - Everywhere in LA, Opening Acts, and The Africa Channel

Amazing news regarding Prince coming again from the wonderful DrFunkenberry! L.A. truly is the house of Prince right now, billboards of him can be see everywhere in the city.

On Friday, Mint Condition will be opening up for Prince & The NPG. Saturday is still a big mistery, but DrFunkenberry says this: "All I can say is it's a girl. She's just a girl..but more than that to us. Trust me. You want to be there."

As we previously reported earlier this week, The Africa Channel is running a half hour special about Prince. "Prince: Behind The Symbol". DrFunkenberry tried to host some videos of the show, but is still trying to work it out.

I also asked The Africa Channel whether they would stream the documentary online after the encores will be done and here's what they had to say: "Of course. If such a deal is possible, you can bet your "purple dollar" you and the rest of our friends will be the first to know! Cross your fingers. You never know".

So have you guys guessed which lucky girl will be opening for Prince on Saturday night?

Mavis Staples - To Receive Honorary Degree from Berklee College of Music

The Berklee College of Music in Boston has announced that Mavis Staples will be receiving an Honorary Degree during the school's commencement ceremony on May 7th. The ceremony will be held at Agganis Arena at Boston University.

Vocalist Mavis Staples, alongside her siblings and her father, catapulted gospel into the pop mainstream as the Staple Singers with No. 1 hits "I'll Take You There" and "Let's Do It Again." From her work with her family through her solo career, launched in 1969 with the release of her self-titled solo album, Staples has continually delivered songs with a larger meaning within a social and political context. The Staple Singers performed at rallies for Martin Luther King Jr., and Mavis's 2007 album We'll Never Turn Back features freedom songs of the civil rights movement.

Over the course of her career, Staples has collaborated with a cross-genre who's who in the industry, including Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Prince, Nona Hendryx, Aretha Franklin, the Band, Booker T & the M.G.'s, Curtis Mayfield, and Natalie Merchant. Mavis Staples finally won her first Grammy Award this year: Best Americana Album. In addition, Staples is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement winner, and a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship Award recipient.

Others receipients of the Honorary Degree include Michael McDonald, Kenny Garrett, Chucho Valdés and Bebo Valdés.

Congratulations to Mavis Staples, an amazing singer, performer, and person. I have to add how much I love her never ending smile and laughter, it's truly contagious!

Raphael Saadiq Performs an Incredible Set at Coachella!

Is it me or was Coachella a total chaos in terms of organization this year? Erykah Badu, Raphael Saadiq and Cee-Lo Green's mic was abruptly shut off before they could end. They did start late, but what artist usually starts off on time?

Raphael Saadiq was one of the major acts of this year's Coachella festival, but due to the festival's tight schedule, he had to compete against Animal Collective - backed up by hyperactive multimedia display across the pitch - and Arcade Fire for the attention of the visitors.

In spite of this, Raphael Saadiq managed to play an incredible 45 minute set. He served up retro soul dotted with horns, keyboard, percussion and guitar. The performance was loaded with selections from his soon to be released album: Stone Rollin'.

Check out some of Raphael Saadiq's performance below:

Erykah Badu performed yesterday on Coachella's second day. She started with "20 Feet Tall" from her latest album "New Amerykah Two". She also performed "Soldier", "Window Seat" and her popular hit songs "Appletree" and "On and On".

Unfortunately, her set was cut short because she started late. Her microphone was abruptly turned off, Erykah Badu decided then to smile and tossed the microphone into the crowd.

George Michael Covers Stevie Wonder for Royal Wedding Gift

George Michael has been tweeting for the past few days about wanting to record a song for Prince William and Kate Middleton. "So excited that about (sic) the song/gift... Recorded the track all over again yesterday in a different key and a new vocals (sic), sounds even more romantic..." Says George Michael.

Which song did he choose? A love song written by Stevie Wonder "You And I". About the song George Michael says: "Suffice to say it's a beautiful song and it was never a single so chances are u don't know it... But I think it's a perfect fit... It was written in the seventies by a genius." He asked Stevie Wonder for approval on his cover and he was happy to give it.

Prince Performs on Lopez Tonight!

The Lopez Tonight show was phenomenal last night! George Lopez opened with a great monologue and straight after that Prince's first performance "Laydown" rocked the house!

George Lopez then went on to interview Prince and asked simply why he chose him from all other late night talk shows.

"The first time I was on the ALMA Awards, you showed me love there and I really appreciated it," Prince told the host. "And also I find that this show represents all people, and I see all kinds of guests on here, and you're kind to all of them."

They also discussed the upcoming concerts in LA and how it is going to be affordable for everyone. "I want to thank you on behalf of the Latino community".

Prince also showed his prized gold fender which he auctioned off for $100,000! "We got $100,000 for that, brother Lewis Hamilton, the racing car driver." Prince also added: “It will be hard to part with this." George also discussed the fact that Prince generously donated $2,000,000 to several charities for the past months.

They continued and discussed how Prince hardly demanded anything to go on the Lopez Tonight show and how he is a vegetarian. Does Prince ever kick it in sweat suits and go to Olive Garden asks George? Well... check out the interview below and find out.

Prince also discussed the music and the internet. He says that the internet has helped for people who sell music. George Lopez also discussed how people used to go to record stores, Prince has all his records he kept them all. He grew up with it, and he says he is here today because of the 60s, 70s, 80s. He also admitted that he does sometimes forget his lyrics, so if you do too don't worry about it.

Prince doesn't mind fans singing his songs, but doesn't like it when the industry covers his songs. Remember a certain show recently covering "Kiss", he surely was pointing at that cover.

By the way when you want to swear from now on say "Artichoke" ;-)

Prince performed a great mix of new and older songs last night, these include "Laydown", "The Beautiful Ones", and "Ur’e The 1 4 Me". Beautiful longtime Prince friend Rosario Dawson was a guest on the show.

The NPG, Sheila E., Misty Copeland, and Prince were phenomenal, electrifying, truly the best music you will hear in this world today!

Mint Condition Release New Album - 7

Minneapolis's Mint Condition are one of the few self-contained soul groups still successfully making music and as you've probably worked out this new 11 tracker is their seventh studio album and it's as varied and eclectic as the first six.

It opens with a pair of rocky soul grooves ('I Can't Get Away' and 'I Want It') which will remind listeners that the Mints came together in the same musical hot spot that gave Prince to the world. They're followed by a trio of pleasing ballads that have a feel of Toni, Tony, Tone about them. 'Caught My Eye' is quite lovely and what's so good about it (and the others too) is that they're not cloyingly sentimental.

Next up is the LP's odd spot – 'Bossalude'. This one's a steel drum-led Latin shuffle whose originality is part of what we come to expect from the Mints. Different again is the next cut -the album's title tune is a broody rap followed by the crisp beater that is 'Ease The Pain'. This is one that will get the interest of the modern soul brigade. Hopefully they'll also enjoy the trio of dramatic, building ballads that round off the collection. Of those 'Not My Daddy' is quite superb. The album ends with 'Twenty Years Later', a wonderful way of finishing their seventh album in 20 years.

Track listing 7:

1. Can't Get Away
2. I Want It
3. Walk On
4. Mind Slicker
5. Caught My Eye
6. Bossalude
7. 7
8. Ease The Pain
9. Unsung
10. Not My Daddy (Feat. Kelly Price)
11. Twenty Years Later

Other performers will also include Michael McDonald, Estelle, Sara Bareilles and DJ Jazzy Jeff.

New Kate Bush Album - Director's Cut

Kate Bush will be releasing an unusual new album “Director’s Cut” on May 17 on her own label Fish People, in conjunction with EMI. On "Directors Cut," Kate revisits a selection of tracks from her albums “The Sensual World” and “The Red Shoes,” a process that presents a fascinating portrait of an artist in a constant state of evolution. She has re-recorded some elements whilst keeping the best musical performances of each song – making it something of a director’s cut but in sound, not vision.

Kate says: “Originally when I wrote the song ‘The Sensual World’ I had used text from the end of ‘Ulysses’ by James Joyce, put to a piece of music I had written. When I asked for permission to use the text I was refused, which was disappointing. I then wrote my own lyrics for the song although I felt that the original idea had been more interesting. Well, I’m not James Joyce am I?  When I came to work on this project I thought I would ask for permission again and this time they said yes.   It is now re-titled ‘Flower Of the Mountain’ and I am delighted that I have had the chance to fulfill the original concept.”

All the lead vocals and drums on “Director’s Cut” are new performances, some of the tracks featuring guests including Steve Gadd, Danny Thompson and, on backing vocals, Mica Paris.  Three songs have been completely re-recorded, one of which is 'This Woman’s Work.'

Kate adds: “ For some time I have felt that I wanted to revisit tracks from these two albums and that they could benefit from having new life breathed into them. Lots of work had gone into the two original albums and now these songs have another layer of work woven into their fabric. I think of this as a new album.”

"Director's Cut"- TRACKLISTING:

FLOWER OF THE MOUNTAIN (a new version of the song originally titled ‘The Sensual World’)
SONG OF SOLOMON
DEEPER UNDERSTANDING
LILY
RED SHOES
THIS WOMAN’S WORK
MOMENTS OF PLEASURE
NEVER BE MINE
TOP OF THE CITY
AND SO IS LOVE
RUBBERBAND GIRL

“Director’s Cut” will be released under the following formats:  Digital Album, Standard CD in a case-bound book, Deluxe CD (three disc package, including "Director’s Cut," "The Sensual Word" and re-mastered "The Red Shoes") in a case-bound book and two-disc vinyl.  Other digital and vinyl formats will be made available on katebush.com. Details will be published shortly.

Kate's new single, a brand new version of 'Deeper Understanding' was just sent to radio. Although written some twenty years ago, the song may be more relevant today than ever.  A new short film to accompany the track will be premiered in a few weeks. It’s directed by Kate and stars Robbie Coltrane, Frances Barber and Noel Fielding - and Kate’s son Albert plays the role of the computer programme. He is also featured in the song, singing as the computer programme. Kate is currently working on new material although no release date has been set for this.

“The Louvre and its stunning glass Pyramid are equaled only by the priceless treasures that are housed within its impressive walls,” Janet Jackson says in a statement. “It is an honor to be asked to participate in such an incredible evening at this historic location. ‘Liaisons au Louvre’ will be an unequaled event, raising much needed funds for this institution and the preservation of art that moves the soul.”

Liaisons au Louvre” was created by Becca Cason Thrash, and in its inaugural event raised $2.7 million in June 2008.

Another great news for Janet Jackson is that her "Number Ones" world tour has been so successful that she has decided to extend it through the fall.

“When creating music or a tour, I draw from what is going on in my life and hope that the fans relate to it,” Jackson said. “I am excited to know that the fans are having a great time at my shows and are asking for more. Thanks for all the love and your input on where I should take the show next. I’ll see you soon!”

The additional dates still have to be announced.

Sade Releases Another New Track from The Ultimate Collection - Love Is Found

Sade's "Ultimate Collection" will be released on May 3rd and we have already heard two new tracks of the double album. Today, another track "Love Is Found" was also released. It's very different from anything you've heard from Sade before.

It seems like it would make a great theme song for a cool action movie. That's the vibe we get from it. The song starts very sothly but then gradually becomes heavier and darker.

So far Sade gave us a taste of  "Still in Love with You", "The Moon and the Sky (remix)" ft. Jay-Z, and now "Love Is Found". Her world tour is also about to start soon and it really sounds like fans will be in a real treat at these concerts.

Sade and Jay-Z Remix "The Moon and The Sky"

Sade has never allowed a rap version of any of theirs songs before, understandably  it came as a big surprise when the news broke last week that Jay-Z had collaborated with the group to remix "The Moon and the Sky".

"The Moon and the Sky" (remix feat. Jay-Z) is one of the three new tracks to feature on the soon to be released compilation of Sade "The Ultimate Collection".

What does Sade think of collaborations: "I'm too scared," Sade said about collaborating. "They'll find me out. It's like The Wizard of Oz. They'll find out there's nothing there. As for collaborations, I'm collaborating with the band and do what we do. I see myself as a member of this band who does these songs that we write...When it comes to sample clearances, I'm probably the cheapest chick in the west." (Los Angeles Times)

To be honest, remixing a song which was absolutely perfect to start with was perhaps not the best choice for a collaboration with Jay-Z. What do you think? Listen to both versions below and let us know.

Today is a a real treat for Jill Scott fans! She released her collaboration with Eve titled "Shame". The track will feature on Jill Scott's upcoming album "Light of the Sun".

She also released a cover of Bill Withers' "Lovely Day". The track won't be featured on her new album, instead it comes from a compilation of unreleased material.

My favorite between the two songs is "Lovely Day", I've always felt good when I hear that song, great way to start off the Spring!
